Bob and I live in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Married twenty-five years, we are empty nesters with two children in college.
We accidentally discovered a love of travel when Bob was laid off from his job shortly after we were married. He explained the news of his lay-off to me as an excellent opportunity to travel for an extended period of time. My employer was kind enough to grant a leave (thank you Miller Nash!), and we took off for a month in Southeast Asia. The next two months we drove round trip from Seattle to Florida, exploring the back roads of our beautiful, diverse country.
As children entered the picture we continued to travel, often visiting family in the Midwest, Northwest, and Florida. Road trips were also popular because they are cheap and there is so much to explore in Oregon and Washington—Cascades National Park (turquoise lakes!), Mt. Rainier (enormous!), the Wallowas (tramway!), the Olympic Peninsula (banana slugs!), the Gorge (windsurfers!), Mount Hood (summer snow!) We became experts in car bingo, the license plate game, roadside picnics, and getting along on the road. While we loved the destinations, the best gifts were the journeys themselves. Navigation mix-ups, unexpected new friends, tow trucks, quirky hotels (the one overrun by rabbits is particularly memorable), trips to the ER—these make great family memories.
We have been fortunate to extend our travels as our kids have grown. We’ve visited international destinations as well as many more regions in the U.S. Every journey
has included memorable moments, all educational, some wonderful, some we’d like to forget (those usually involve tow trucks). We look forward to adding to our memory bank with our latest adventure to Europe!
